Baby Crib Bedding Sets and Newborn Care

It only makes sense that when you shop for your baby’s crib, you’ll be looking for bedding, too. A large number of crib sets contain 3 to 6 pieces, but how many of those do you actually need? Most pediatricians now recommend keeping the crib free from any extra bedding, so all you really need is a crib sheet. Leaks will happen, of course, so buy a few extra crib sheets. It’s better to spend your money on a few really good, durable, and comfortable crib sheets than on accessories you don’t even need.

Neither bumper pads nor comforters are recommended for newborns, as they both increase the risk of suffocation. Most parents worry about their baby getting too cold, but this problem is easily solved with swaddling blankets or a sleep sack. Sleep sacks have become a commonplace item these days. While a bit difficult to explain to someone who’s never seen one before, a photograph will clear things up instantly. Swaddling blankets have come a long way, with many mow featuring special fasteners to keep the blanket snug. Because it is similar to the tight space of the womb, many new babies find swaddling comforting. A comforter can still be a good idea to keep on hand for wrapping your baby while you’re holding them. Just remember that you have to put your baby into the crib without the quilt.

You may have seen the foam wedges that are sometimes recommended for young babies, to keep them sleeping on their backs. But young babies are not able to roll over, so if you put them to bed on their backs, they’ll stay on their backs. And by the time they are able to roll onto their tummies, SIDS is no longer such a serious concern. You should also realize that these foam wedges are themselves soft bedding, which is not recommended by most pediatricians for very young babies.

Other items included in a bedding set can include a window valance, diaper stacker, toy bag, and crib skirt. These can make the nursery look great, but aren’t necessary if you’re on a budget.

It is understandable, however, that you might want a bedding set to complete the look of your baby’s room. If so, just get unisex crib bedding like a Hot Cocoa crib set. {It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.}
