Choosing Nursery Bedding Carefully: Vital Facts to Keep in Mind
If you’re not sure how you want to decorate your nursery, start by choosing the baby bedding set. So you’ve chosen the whole nursery decor, right down to the stuffed animals that will sit on the dresser… but aren’t you forgetting something? You baby is going to spend a lot of time in the crib, so choose the bedding carefully. Here are some things you need to think about:
– First are foremost, consider your newborn’s comfort. Bedding should be soft, with 100% cotton being one of the best choices. Knit cotton, flannel, and high thread count woven cotton are all excellent choices.
– Do not buy bedding that is hand-wash or dry clean only, you’re not going to have time for it. Make sure it’s machine washable or don’t buy it.
– The crib sheet has to fit the crib mattress properly, or there could be a saftey concern. There are, however, elastic straps designed to improve the fit of your crib sheets, so you can use those if you have any concerns.
– Before buying a bedding set, decide if you really need one. A three piece bedding set includes a comforter, a crib sheet, and a bumper pad. But, the American Academy of Pediatrics questions the safety of crib bumpers and recommends against using loose blankets or comforters on a baby under one year old. Purchasing separates can be smarter and cheaper than buying a bedding set. If you’re worried about coordinating, don’t be. By purchasing separates, you actually give yourself more freedom to be creative with the nursery.
– When all else has been addressed, spend some time picking bedding that will fit the rest of the room, including your furniture.
Buying bedding within your budget can be a concern, but take into account that you may use it longer than you think. If you get good-quality bedding, you can use it on both the crib and your toddler bed, allowing you to use it for several years. If you’re just starting your family and think you might have more children, try gender neutral baby bedding like the Vintage bedding set, that can be reused over and over with each new baby. If you are sure there will be no more kids, however, then buying high-quality (and expensive!) baby bedding is not so important. But whatever you decide, you should make sure you have several sets on hand – you’re going to need them!
